The Importance of SAT Subject Test

It is mandatory for students who apply to colleges in the USA to take the SAT and submit their scores. However, the SAT Subject test is optional and many students choose not to attempt it. This is a common mistake and a potentially costly one too.

Why should you take the SAT Subject test?

There are reasons for the importance of SAT subject test. If you are not sure if you want to take it or not, or don’t know which ones to take, here are some good reasons of taking the SAT subject test

* The SAT subject score helps showcase your interest and expertise in that particular subject * There are many colleges that consider, recommend or require SAT Subject test scores.

Make sure you check the requirements for the major you are applying for.

* If you had learned a course online or over the summer, and want to prove your proficiency in the subject, take the SAT Subject test.

* Some colleges give credit for introductory courses based on your SAT subject test score.

* Sometimes, your score in a subject at school may not be a true indicator of your knowledge or interest in that subject –

a missed test or the homework you forgot to turn in can lower your score too!).

You can demonstrate your zeal for the subject by scoring well on the SAT subject test.

* A SAT subject test score in Language or Literature Is a good opportunity for international students to show their proficiency in English.

What are the SAT Subject test areas and topics?

The Subject Tests are one-hour-long exams that are scored on a 200-800 scale. They are multiple choice questions in a range of academic subjects.

It is important to note that SAT Subject Tests, unlike the SAT Reasoning Test, will be very much like your high school course in terms of the content tested on.

So, the time required for preparation for the test will not be much.

There are 5 test areas – Math, Science, History, English, and Languages.

Mathematics has two levels –

SAT Math Level 1

The test will assess your knowledge gained from college preparatory algebra and geometry in high school.

It will also indicate your leaning towards math-oriented programs such as engineering, technology, and economics.

SAT Math Level 2

In addition to the material covered in Math 1, trigonometry and pre-calculus (elementary functions) is also covered.

This shows your interest in higher level mathematics. If you intend to apply to selective colleges for engineering and technology programs, Math 2 is strongly recommended.

The SAT Subject Tests in both Math 1 and Math 2 need disciplined practice in order to reinforce the concepts learned during high school.

Expert mentoring and targeted tutoring can help you score well on the test

Science

SAT Physics Subject Test

The Physics Subject Test gauges how well you have understood the introductory physics you’ve learned in high school.

You have developed your problem-solving skill and reasoning ability (obtained from lab experience).

Scoring a high score on this test is a way to indicate your interest in pursuing a science or math-related course of study in your application to college.

A qualified tutor can help you master the concepts and gain confidence to ace the test.

SAT Chemistry Subject Test

The Subject Test in Chemistry show that you understand alls the basic concepts of the subject and can apply these principles to solve problems in Chemistry.

A strong foundation in Chemistry is required for any advanced program in science and engineering.

Experienced Chemistry tutors can skillfully guide you through the maze of chemical equations.

SAT Biology Subject Test

The Biology test shows your focus on ecological/molecular biology and assesses your understanding of the concepts of biology that were learned at the high school level.

Biology –E (Ecological) test deals with biological populations and communities.

Biology – M (Molecular) is about cells, cellular structure, biochemistry, and other cellular processes.

Both these subject test are dissimilar and cannot be taken on the same day.

Which SAT Subject Test should I take?

* If your target-school requires/recommends a specific subject test, take it.

* Engineering schools usually ask for Math and 2 Sciences, some schools want two tests from different areas. Check the website of the particular college.

* Your choice of SAT Subject Tests should align with the program you wish to pursue.

But you can show your breadth of interests by taking tests in Math, Science, and English Language/History.

* Choose subjects in which you are confident of scoring well.

The importance of SAT Reasoning Test score for international students

Most of the top private colleges and universities in the USA keep their international enrollment (UG) at about 10%.

If you are aiming for a top-notch college that admits only the cream of students from across the world, your SAT score will matter and make a difference.

The admission process of American colleges is quite complex. Your holistic profile, and not just the test scores, is taken into account.

Though nothing can guarantee admission, a perfect SAT score will be a great advantage and keep you in the race for a top-ranking college.

Over a million international students apply for admissions each year, so colleges have trouble deciphering high school transcripts because of different grading systems

That’s why colleges rely on SAT scores to gauge a student’s readiness for the academic rigor of college education.

Remember This

* You cannot take the SAT Reasoning Test and the SAT Subject Test on the same day.

* SAT Subject Tests are an hour long and are content based.

* You can take up to 3 Subject Tests on one test date.

* June is the perfect time to take SAT Subject Test if you are already studying for your AP exam in that subject (AP exam in May) Since you have studied all year for a rigorous AP course, SAT Subject Test will be easy!
